The role
Wayve is expanding its presence in Japan, and we're looking for a capable and resourceful IT Systems Engineer to be the **foundational member of our IT team in Kinagawa**. This is not a traditional support role—you will serve as both hands-on technician and local IT lead, responsible for ensuring the productivity of our Japan-based employees and the operational readiness of our fleet and engineering facilities.
As our first IT hire in the region, you’ll work with a high degree of independence and take ownership of IT infrastructure and support operations in Japan, while coordinating closely with the global IT team in Europe and the US. This is a critical, high-visibility role for someone who enjoys both solving technical problems and building IT systems from the ground up.
Key responsibilities:
Local Ownership & Autonomy
Serve as the primary IT point of contact for our Japan based site—including office, warehouse, and vehicle depot operations.
Take full ownership of local IT setup, including network, user support, hardware management, and meeting spaces.
Proactively identify and resolve IT needs in a timezone where support may not be immediately available.
Hands-On Systems Support
Provide end-to-end user support for Windows, macOS, and Linux devices.
Manage IT onboarding/offboarding, asset provisioning, access controls, and local inventory.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and connectivity issues quickly and professionally.
Network & Infrastructure
Assist in configuring and maintaining reliable wired and wireless networks, VPN, and site connectivity.
Support data offload processes and infrastructure used by vehicle fleets and engineering teams.
Liaise with local vendors and ISPs to implement IT infrastructure according to global standards.
Security & Compliance
Ensure adherence to corporate security policies and regulatory requirements.
Work closely with Security, Legal, and Facilities to implement endpoint hardening, access control, and physical security.
Collaboration & Project Work
Support rollout of new systems, software, and tools in alignment with global IT roadmaps.
Document local processes and contribute to global IT documentation and knowledge base.
Provide input into scaling the IT function in Japan, including future hiring and vendor selection.
About you
Essential
- 4+ years in IT systems engineering, desktop support, or infrastructure administration.
- Strong hands-on experience with macOS, Windows, and Linux support.
- Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, VPNs) and experience with on-site infrastructure setup.
- Fluent in both Japanese and English (written and spoken), with the ability to support local users and coordinate with global teams.
- Capable of engaging effectively with vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders in both languages.
Desirable
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field—or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Apple ACSP, or Cisco CCNA.
- Strong troubleshooting and prioritization skills in an environment where escalation paths may have time delays.
- Able to collaborate effectively with global colleagues across time zones and cultures.
This is a full-time role based in our office in Yokohama, Japan. At Wayve we want the best of all worlds so we operate a hybrid working policy that combines time together in our offices and workshops to fuel innovation, culture, relationships and learning, and time spent working from home.
We understand that everyone has a unique set of skills and experiences and that not everyone will meet all of the requirements listed above. If you’re passionate about self-driving cars and think you have what it takes to make a positive impact on the world, we encourage you to apply.
